The new patent builds on Smartlink Data Connector’s user-interface integration engine, adding real-time data movement and one-click, in-context access to third-party health IT applications.
Cary, North Carolina — July 14, 2026 — Smartlink Health Solutions today announced a second U.S. patent for its Integration Platform as a Service solution, Smartlink Data Connector (SDC), issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office as Patent No. 12,682,992. Titled “Extension of User Interface Based Software Integration to Near Real Time and Single Sign On,” the patent extends Smartlink’s first patent (US 11,783,922 B1) into two new areas: near real-time data exchange and single sign-on between EHRs and third-party applications.
SDC integrates with EHRs and other health IT systems through FHIR, HL7, APIs, database connections, and patented UI-based automation. Combining those methods gives it bidirectional reach that standard, API-limited platforms can’t match — extracting data from and delivering it into virtually any EHR, without vendor involvement. Smartlink’s first patent covered that bidirectional engine. The second patent tackles two problems that grow as care teams add more software to their day.
The first is speed. Traditional UI-based integration checks for new data on a set schedule, so there’s a lag between when data changes and when it moves. The patented approach detects a change at the source and moves it as it happens. For example, when two systems schedule patients for the same clinic, real-time sync can prevent a double-booking that a periodic check would miss.
The second is access friction. Care teams often juggle logins across the EHR and a stack of separate tools. The patented method uses a browser extension that acts as a trusted identity broker: from a button inside the EHR, a user can open a third-party application already scoped to the current patient — no second login, no hunting for the record. It relies on standard protocols like SAML, so third-party vendors can plug into the clinical workflow without building custom single sign-on for every EHR.
“Our first patent proved you can integrate with any EHR through its user interface. This one takes the next step — making that exchange real-time and putting third-party tools one click away, scoped to the patient you’re already viewing.
